The Friday classes for Beginners will continue to be offered at 5:30pm.

As soon as we have a growth spurt of our Beginners Program, we will offer another time slot for Mondays and Wednesdays.

Again, this class change will be effective March 22nd, 2010.

Closed This Friday

The Dojo of Karate will be closed Friday, March 19th.

Goal Setting Skills – A Corner Stone In Martial Arts Training

March 10th, 2010

achieving goals 300x191 Goal Setting Skills A Corner Stone In Martial Arts Training

As parents and adults, you understand how important it is to set goals in life.  If you don’t, basically you’re not going anywhere!

“Our plans miscarry because they have no aim. When a man does not know what harbor he is making for, no wind is the right wind.
Seneca

Seneca says it best.

Training at The Dojo of Karate we help your child set goals in life.  But it begins with setting goals in Martial Arts.

The Dojo of Karate is a Black Belt School.  That means all of our students have the goal of becoming a Black Belt one day.

Mind you, achieving this goal is a long process, but they are determined to make it all the way… no matter what.

But, it all starts with the first class, and the baby steps in-between each rank.

See, we have a belt ranking system that helps students achieve goals and learn what it takes to accomplish them.  In addition, they are rewarded stripes on their belt for learning certain material in their curriculum.

This is almost the same format that is approached in the armed forces.

Plus, our Karate classes will organize certain drills, activities, and games that will help push your child to the next level by having friendly competitions.  This way, they learn how to set short term goals too.

As you probably know, in life, we need to have short, medium, and long term goals.  Students at The Dojo of Karate set their goals like this usually.

  1. Short Term – Get their next stripe on their belt for learning a certain form.
  2. Medium Term – Get to Low Green Belt – which is the half-way point to Black Belt
  3. Long Term – Become a Black Belt!

We’ve seen kids set goals at improving their grades in school, make the basketball team, become leaders at the Karate school… the list goes on!  And, they all achieve them.

Do you want your child to not only set goals in life, but achieve them in a way that will give them the confidence necessary to achieve anything?

Enroll them in our Beginners Karate Program by calling 303.920.4500 or email us at: info@TheDojoOfKarate.com.

Can Martial Arts Teach Your Child Respect?

February 24th, 2010

Martial Arts Student Performs Bow

It’s not uncommon for parents to enroll their kids into our Beginners Karate Program to teach their child the importance of respect because they may not have respect for themselves… or adults, such as teachers or their own mom and dad’s.

From the very first class, students at The Dojo of Karate are taught what respect is, and why it’s important.

This is what we mean…

When your child comes into our school the first thing that happens is we introduce ourselves with a nice, firm handshake.  After that, though, it all changes.

Our instructor will go over the Martial Arts training they will be receiving, and to not be abusive with this art by hurting others, rather using it as a form of self-protection.  That is showing respect to the art of Karate.

Next, before a student is allowed to come onto our training floor, which is also known as a dojo, students need to do 2 bows.  The first one is to show respect to the dojo floor where you will be training in Karate.  The next, is to show respect to the Black Belt instructor that is on the floor.  This is very similar to the military.

Than, when they get ready to participate in class, we have a bowing ritual that the entire class, including the instructor, performs before and after classes.  We bow to the American Flag and Japanese flag, as we want to show respect to both countries for the privilege of having freedom and learning traditional Karate.  Next, we bow to the Black Belt Instructor, as this is a form of saying “thank you” for teaching us.  Lastly, we bow to the entire class to show respect to our fellow students.

Why all these bows?  Well, in Japan, the most important characteristic they look for in a person is someone that demonstrates respect.

If you think about it, Karate was developed to protect one’s family or village.  If a soldier or army attacked your village, it was considered dis-respectful.  Thus, the locals developed an art of self-defense.

In addition, bowing to others is like doing a military solute in the armed forces.  It is a form of respect for ranked officers, to their country, and each other.

Your child will not only learn why it is important to be respectful to others, but understand how it can benefit them in life.

Broomfield Adult Self-Defense, part 1

February 12th, 2010

Self-Defense Develops Confidence

The Dojo of Karate offers one of the best Adult Self-Defense programs in Colorado because it is a reality based self-protection training that is extremely easy to learn and execute.

Below we are going to explain to you a few ways our program can help your confidence, fitness, conditioning, and knowledge.

Self Defense Black Belt Program Develops Confidence

That’s right, our Self-Defense Black Belt Program will give you confidence.

How?

Well, we’ll teach you the fundamentals on how to punch correctly, where to strike, how a pressure point will affect your opponents, and which techniques will be more effective.

You may not become a lethal weapon in our training, but you’ll have the swagger needed to defend yourself in any given situation.

Self Defense Black Belt Program Is Reality Based Training

Also, with our reality based self-defense all students are required to give their best effort, and not be a good attacker.  Instead of punching away from your targeted area, we concentrate on striking at all targeted areas with precision and control.

For instance, when we work partnered self-defense moves, the simulated attacker will execute techniques in a way that will allow the defender the opportunity to defend correctly.  If the defender somehow forgets, or misses the punch or kick, they will not be injured due to our “fighters distance”.

This is our operating distance where techniques could potentially hit you, however, the distance established allows you to be safe.

Once you get more comfortable, the designated attacker will move at a faster pace, which than requires you to react faster.  Simulating reality training.

Without making actual full contact, as a beginner, you are getting the necessary training to react for certain attacks.

Next time we’ll talk about fitness & conditioning when training in the Self-Defense Black Belt Program.

January Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

January 6th, 2010

Dear Students & Parents,

First and foremost, HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!

The Dojo of Karate would like to first thank you for all of your support and encouragement during 2009.  It has been a wonderful journey so far, and we look forward to see what 2010 has to bring us!

Many of you have been asking how close The Dojo of Karate got to reaching our goal of 100 students, and well, we fell a bit short, but nothing to hang our heads down.

We finished the year with 88 students, which compared to the corporate giants across the U.S., that’s pretty good.

Class Schedule

We are currently looking at the class schedule for 2010 and getting feedback from many parents about times that could possibly work.  We have taken your input into consideration and will be looking at expanding our class schedule within the next 2 months.  A common request has been earlier classes for the stay-at-home parent.  So, we will address this as soon as possible.

Our Children Intermediate class has grown tremendously, and therefore we made some modifications.  For the meantime, we are allowing students in the Intermediate ranks to attend classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4pm or 6pm.

Please make sure if you plan on attending a certain class time, that you commit to that slot, so we can prepare for possible overflow.

Belt Tests

Many of you have noticed that our belt tests are currently being held once per month on a Friday during class – instead of creating an actual belt test.  We are going to continue this format until further notice.  It seemed to work fine during the Holidays, however, as our school grows, we may need to revert back to our old format — canceling classes on Friday and having a separate belt test.

Parent Appreciation Month

We really appreciate all that our parents do at The Dojo of Karate.  You bring your child(ren) to and from classes, feed them, prepare them for school, look over their homework, and all of the other unnoticed things many of us miss.

To show our appreciation, we are introducing a new program called Parent Appreciation Month.

If you have a child enrolled in one of our Martial Arts programs, than a parent can tryout 1 month of traditional Karate, Adult Self-Defense, Fitness Kickboxing, or Fitness Boot Camp for FREE.

Many of you have been hinting at the fact of giving one of our programs a shot… now this way you’ve got nothing to lose!

If you are interested in taking advantage of Parent Appreciation Month, please contact Mr. Lozano and setup an appointment with him, to discuss the program.

2009 Holiday Party & Banquet

Our 1st Annual Holiday Party was a great success.  We had about 85 people attend, and it was a sure blast.  If you happened to miss it, hopefully you can attend the next one.  But, we’ll probably have to host the party at a different venue because it was a tight fit in the school.

We also had a slide show, called The Dojo of Karate Year in Review – 2009.  If you haven’t seen it yet, go to YouTube and watch it there!  It basically takes you through the beginning, when The Dojo of Karate was preparing to open, to where it is now.

We than ended up giving out awards to various students for their amazing efforts in class.  For 2010, we would like to get the entire school involved in helping create different categories, so we can recognize outstanding students in our school.  As December nears again, we’ll announce it.

Board Breaking Seminar

Have you ever wanted to learn how to break a board with a sweet punch or powerful kick?  How about we teach you how to properly break boards, and have fun doing it.

We will host our first Board Breaking Seminar on Saturday, January 30th 2010 from 11am to 1pm.

This is your opportunity to learn how to properly break boards with a hammer fist strike, reverse punch, elbow strike, front kick or side kick.

We will have various board sizes for kids and adults of different ages.  Each student will have approximately 3-5 boards a piece with their initial entrance fee, and you can purchase more at an additional cost.

The cost of the Board Breaking Seminar has not been determined yet, but once we find out, we’ll let you know.

Inter-School Tournament

This has been something that The Dojo of Karate has been wanting to plan for a few months, but due to conflicting times, it has been put off… until now!

The Dojo of Karate will be hosting our 1st Annual Inter School Tournament on Saturday, February 27th 2010, from 10am to 1pm.

Each student will have an opportunity to learn what it is like to compete in a real Karate tournament, without the pressure that comes with competing at Open Karate Tournaments.

Students will be entered in various divisions by age and rank, in order to level out the competition equally.  Every student that enters the tournament must compete in both Forms and Sparring, as this will teach everyone how to balance their Martial Arts training at The Dojo.

There will be awards for 1st place through 3rd place competitors, and finalists awards for everyone else that competes.  So, no one goes hope empty handed!

We will also need adult volunteers to help judge in divisions and keep time and keep score during each event.  Volunteers will receive special training on how to properly perform each of these duties.

The cost for the tournament is yet to be determined, but we would like for families to mark your calendar, as this is a school function, and we would like for everyone to participate in it, since it is part of your Martial Arts training.

New School Closure Policy

The Dojo of Karate will now be observing U.S. Bank Holidays throughout the year, unless otherwise announced during classes.

In addition we will be closing The Dojo for 1 week during Independence Day and 1 week during Christmas.  This will allow for Mr. Lozano to spend time with his family.

Lessons can be for 30 minutes or 60 minutes, and can cover anything that the students may want to review or learn.

Please contact Mr. Lozano to get pricing options and available times.

Corporate Seminars

The Dojo of Karate is looking for companies that are interested in taking advantage of corporate seminars that will cover Self-Defense and/or our Fitness Programs.

These seminars for for adults looking to learn basic self-defense skills, to give participants the confidence necessary to protect one’s self.

If the company is interested in a Lunch Workout, than we can conduct Fitness Boot Camp Sessions twice a week.

These seminars will be hosted at the companies location, however, it depends if there is enough space for all participants.

If your company would like to discuss more about these seminars, please have an associate contact The Dojo of Karate or pass on the main contact person’s information to Mr. Lozano, so we can get in touch with them.

Until Next Time…
