Broomfield Martial Arts School Hosts Free Adult Self-Defense Seminar

March 25th, 2010

Westminster, CO – March 24th, 2010 – Local Self-Defense and Fitness instructor, Javier Lozano, Jr. recently hosted a Free Adult Self-Defense seminar on Saturday, March 20th, 2010 to residents of Broomfield and Westminster.

Participants who attended the self-defense clinic ranged from parents who’s child currently train in The Dojo of Karate’s Children Martial Arts Program, to friends who are members of their Fitness KickBoxing Program and Self-Defense Black Belt Program offered at their main headquarters.

Martial Arts expert and Certified Self-Defense Instructor, Javier Lozano, Jr. is the owner and Master Instructor of The Dojo of Karate — a local Martial Arts and Fitness school serving the community of Broomfield, Westminster, and Thornton, CO.  Javier has been training in Karate for 20 years, currently holds a 3rd Degree Black Belt, and is a former World Champion fighter.

His expertise, knowledge, and ability to teach and relate the subject of self-defense to adults places him in a unique category, and allows his students to gain more knowledge and skills.

The two hour Self-Defense Workshop taught participants the importance of awareness, confidence, and proper striking and escape defenses.

Says Lozano, “the one part of self-defense that many people neglect and don’t really consider is awareness and confidence.  Victims are typically the one’s that are not completely aware of their surroundings, busy talking on their cell phones, or distracted by something else.”

Master Lozano also mentions that one’s confidence can really change a situation. “When someone is walking down the street with their chin up, shoulders back, and walking with a purpose, they usually stand out.  Those people are less likely to become the prey of an attacker because attackers are always looking for the easy target.”

After teaching the class about the importance of awareness and confidence, the class finally went into the ‘meat and potatoes’ of their training — striking, blocking, and escapes.

What made Mr. Lozano’s class extremely different from other self-defense seminars is that he didn’t teach students how to properly punch, rather, use other techniques that are more likely to prevent injury and create more damage to an opponent.

For instance, he emphasized how palm heel strikes can be more effective for women when defending themselves, as opposed to punches.  The reason is a palm heel strike to a male’s face is a better technique than a fist because most women have smaller hands and can break a bone quite easily.

Some of the other strikes students learned over the weekend included elbow strikes, hammer fist strikes, stomp kicks, roundhouse kicks, and side kicks.

Each of these techniques were performed on free standing heavy bags, allowing participants the opportunity to know how it feels to make contact with an object that can mimic a human opponent.

Once the students learned how to execute some major striking techniques, Mr. Lozano taught them two basic blocking moves that are practical during self-defense.  Students were than paired off with partners to practice the blocking techniques while their partner threw punches at them in a controlled format.

“The only way to learn how to defend yourself is to train in a reality-based setting where you have an attacker throwing a designated technique and the defender reacting to the attack with a certain block” says Lozano.  “This will develop your timing and confidence, while not getting injured.”

“But once you have developed the basic skills, our Self-Defense classes will add progression to your training, making each class more challenging and unique.”

Once the students developed their striking skills, the workshop shifted to Escape Defense, where participants learned how to escape from 4 common attacks: Wrist Grab, Bear Hug, Choke, and Mount (on the ground, while opponent is on top).

The escapes taught were easy to perform, simple to memorize, and flowed properly with the striking techniques students learned earlier during the session.

At the end of the two hour Self-Defense seminar, Master Instructor Javier Lozano discussed how attackers work in groups, and how confidence can play a major role by sharing a few stories that related to the seminar.

All of the participants felt the seminar was invaluable, and that they walked out with a wealth of information, yet not overwhelmed with what they learned.  More importantly, students left with the confidence to fight back if necessary.

“I tell all of my students, when they join our self-defense program, if they are ever confronted and need to protect themselves, I want them to walk out safe by using every means possible to fight off an attacker.  My student’s safety is more important to me than anything else.  And, if I can teach them how to properly protect themselves, even better.”

Only Black Belts Can Defend Themselves

Black Belts Learn Self-Defense

This is a common misconception that novices make when wanting to learn self-defense. Some of this came about because we only see pictures of Black Belts perform self-defense moves.  Or we see all of those movies with fighting scenes, which are performed by a Black Belt.

From there we begin to build in our head, that learning to defend yourself will require a Black Belt, and it takes FOREVER to earn a Black Belt… right.

Fortunately for you, this is no longer the case.

Self-Defense is for anyone.  That’s right.  If you have the want or feel the urgency to learn how to protect you and your family, than you need to join our Self-Defense Black Belt Program.

You will learn how to defend yourself in about 3-4 months.  That’s how efficient our self-defense system is designed.  And, if you decide to continue your training, which we highly encourage, than you can potentially earn an official Black Belt in Self-Defense in about 3 years, hence the name of our program.

When you join our Adult Self-Defense Program, this is what you will gain from it

  1. Confidence – You will begin to believe in yourself and know that you can protect yourself because of the way we teach you the various skills necessary to progress.  Our drills are designed to get the best out of you, by giving you various ways of repeating certain techniques.
  2. Knowledge – You will start to know how an attacker thinks, and what they are trying to do.  All attackers have a common goal, and typically go after the weakest people.  By gaining knowledge on how an attacker plucks its pray, you will alter even the way you walk down the street.
  3. Strength & Conditioning – This isn’t the most important attribute you will gain from our program, but it can play a factor.  By executing kicks, punches, strikes, & blocks at various tempos and in different formats, your power will increase because you are using different muscles.  And, by performing some techniques at a high pace, you will begin to condition yourself to go the extra mile.

Our Self-Defense system has been military tested, but simplified for you to learn.  Why?  Because the ultimate goal is to get you to learn how to use real world self-protection techniques in a manner that makes sense.  If you need to think more about what you will do next, than your attacker will gain control.  But, if you learn tactics and moves that get the job done, your attacker will realize they made a mistake.

I highly encourage you come to The Dojo of Karate and try 1 Self-Defense class for free.  You will realize how efficient our system is and enjoy learning self-defense.

Learn Self-Defense With Just 4 Easy Tips

October 21st, 2009

Self-Defense ProgramThe Dojo of Karate teaches Karate and self-defense to kids and adults in the Broomfield, Westminster, and Thornton area of Colorado.

The Master Instructor is Javier Lozano, Jr. — a 3rd degree black belt in the Japanese combat art of Wado Karate, World Champion fighter, and nearly 19 years of Martial Arts experience… so I knows a thing or two about self-defense.

When you train at The Dojo of Karate, your safety is my biggest concern.  About 50% of my students train in the Martial Arts to learn self-defense, therefore making sure my students have the confidence to defend themselves is pretty crucial.

I have 4 EASY tips to offer you about Self-Defense.  Now, will you be able to disarm an attacker with a weapon with these 4 tips… probably not because training and building skill, develops your technique…  and you need to develop self-protection skills.

But, what it will do is teach you the fundamentals my adult self-defense  students learn when they train in our Self-Defense Black Belt Program.

  1. Awareness Of Your Surroundings – This is probably the number one reason why people become victims to crimes in large cities or small towns — they are not aware of their surroundings.  This means you need to know what is around you at all times.  Especially late at night.  And, if your friend is texting you the latest gossip about your friend, but your iPhone back in your purse and leave it alone until you get into your car.  If it is dark outside, make sure walk outside knowing what is around you by constantly keeping your head up and seeing who passes you or who may be behind you at all times… until you get to your final SAFE destination.
  2. Confidence – Believe it or not, if you walk around with your head down, shoulders slouched forward, and never make eye contact, attackers tend to find these victims as “easy targets”.  Why??? Because you are not displaying the confidence that an attacker does not want to approach.  Think of it like this… Lions go after prey that they  KNOW they can kill in order to eat.  A lion will never go after a Cheetah…  So, the next time you’re walking to your car after a night of fun in town, keep your head-up, shoulders pulled back, and always look around you.  Strut your stuff like you know are the last person someone wants to mess with.
  3. Throw Them Bows – Remember that Ludacris song “Throw Them Bow”?  That exactly what you want to do when someone tries to assault you.  If someone comes to attack you, use your elbows because its one of the hardest parts of your body.  Plus, it’s practically impossible to break the elbow when you are driving it into at attackers nose.  When you “throw them bows” keep your hands in strike vertically (up and down motion) or horizontally (across motion).  This gives you a few different strikes you can use when you get attacked.  Next time, I will show you how to properly execute a bow strike.
  4. Kick For Fences – So after you’ve struck your attacker with a few bows to the face, you need to finish off your assaulter.  I do not typically agree with kicks to the groin, merely because they can sometimes be ineffective to most large attackers… But, if you kick with the instep of your foot and aim to kick your attacker at the head, merely through the crotch… than it’s an effective kick. :)   Why? Because you’re driving your kick to target that is further way, and need to develop ‘momentum’… you just so happen to be going through the groin to get to your target.

That’s it… You’ve got 4 EASY Self-Defense Tips you can apply to your everyday living.

Now if you would actually like to learn HOW to defend yourself in less than 3 months and potentially earn a Black Belt in 3 years, than you need to check out our Self-Defense Black Belt Program.  This is a reality based self-defense class that is no non-sense, to the point, and easy to perform.  It’s a ‘thinkers’ art of self-protection combat.

I promise you that you’ll enjoy our Self-Defense Black Belt Program that I would like to offer you 1 FREE trial class with no obligation.  I want to make sure you are so confident in yourself, that the 1st two tips are just a given and the second two tips are just a piece of your wide arsenal self-defense techniques.
