March Martial Arts Newsletter – 2011

February 15th, 2011

Greetings!

I can’t believe how quickly the new year has gone by so far. We are already in March. The Winter/Spring storms of Colorado are making their waves with freezing temperatures and countless inches of snow.

This means that the ski season is off to a great start !

Anyways, I just wanted to give everyone an update for the month of February and March 2011, since we didn’t have a big update for January.

Inner School Karate Tournament

We had our 2nd Annual Inner School Karate Tournament and it was a huge success… again! We had nearly 60 competitors this time and thanks to all of the parents and volunteers, you helped make the tournament run very smoothly this year.

Many of our beginner Karate students competed for the first time in the Inner School Tournament, while our Intermediate and Advanced Karate students competed for their follow up tournament.

Checkout this video of our Beginners Karate Students competing.

And, we have another video of our Intermediate and Advanced Karate students competing.

The beauty about our Inner School Karate Tournament is that every student was able to win something from 1st place to finalist, every child walked away with a medal.

In addition, I hope that every student learned a few key principals in competing in our school tournament, such as Sportsmanship, Perseverance, Confidence, Respect, Integrity, and Indomitable Spirit… to name a few.

Also, if many of you have not heard or seen, one of our first Karate students, Andrew S. ended up winning the Overall Grand Champion Points for sparring by scoring 50 points in 11 matches. If you have a chance to see in during classes, please make sure to congratulate him.

We will try to host two Inner School Tournaments per year to allow students an opportunity to compete and see how exciting competition really is.

Board Breaking Seminar

It’s here again! The 2nd Annual Board Breaking Seminar.

If you were here last year, you’ll remember that we host a board breaking seminar that was featured on Fox 31 News – Good Day Colorado with Dan Daru.

Well, this year we may not get the publicity we desire, students will get the joy of breaking boards at our school.

This year, we plan on hosting the Board Breaking Seminar on Friday, April 1st from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

Since most students were done breaking their boards last year in such a short amount of time, we decided to move the day to a Friday evening so families could have the weekend to themselves.

The cost to participate in the board breaking seminar will be approximately $30 to $35/student and each students will receive about 8-10 boards per person. More details to come shortly.

We will have a pre-registration signup sheet at the front desk.

If you’re curious to see how last years Board Breaking Seminar went, checkout this video!

Student Resource Page

We are putting together a Student Resource Page for students and families of The Dojo of Karate. That way, everyone can refer back to this page to get information about the school, curriculum, belt tests, Black Belt Club, etc.

This page is still in the works, however, we are making progress. So, there will be some links that do not work (for a reason) while others do work. Please check back periodically to see if there are any updates.

Below is the link to our Student Resource Page.

Eventually, we will have a student login page, with a user name and password, where this information will only be accessible to members of the school.

More to follow over the next few weeks.

School Closures

We will be closed for 3 days during Adams 12 Spring Break from Wednesday, March 23rd to Friday, March 25th. We will only be open on Monday and Tuesday, March 21st and March 22nd. Please mark your calendars!

Wado Karate Seminars Coming Up

If many of you remember, Sensei Robbie Smith from New Zealand came to The Dojo of Karate last June to teach a quick 2 hour class. We were very fortunate that he was able to take time out of his day from training in Shindo Yoshin Ryu Jujitsu and make an appearance at our school.

He is coming back this June and would like to teach a seminar on Sunday, June 19th. This seminar may only be reserved for my teens & adults and advanced ranking students. We know that is Father’s Day, so we are going to see if we can make some adjustments.

More detail to come.

Next, there is a chance that we can fly out Sensei Bob Nash during the 3rd week of May. This seminar will also be reserved to a select few Advanced Karate students and my Teens and Adults Karate students. Once we book his ticket, I will let the school know the cost of the seminar and what to expect.

If you are interested in spectating, that will be fine too.

Lastly, Takagi Sensei, founder of Wado Guseikai Japan will be traveling to Nashville, TN. There will be a seminar there from September 16th to 18th.

If there is ever a trip to save your money for and train with the best Wado practitioner on the planet, this is the one.

Takagi Sensei does not make many trips to the US and this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity for many.

I will be going to this seminar with hopes that many of our students will go too.

Again… more information to come when it nears.

Well, that’s it.

Until Next Time!

Sensei Lozano
