Karate Students Kick Breast Cancer, One Pink Belt At A Time

June 3rd, 2010

Westminster, CO — June 3rd, 2010 — Martial Arts students at The Dojo of Karate & Fitness show how they can help kick and punch breast cancer by wearing Pink Karate Belts in class during the week of June 7th to June 11th.

This is a new fund raising program created by owner and Master Instructor, Javier Lozano, Jr.

He decided that their Karate school needed to demonstrate their support to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, taking place in the Rocky Mountains from June 25th to June 27th, 2010.

“As a business owner, I feel it is my responsibility to get our school together as a community and stand up for something that is important.  Breast Cancer is something that affects friends, families, and loved ones”, says Lozano.  “In my opinion, business owners have a moral obligation to their clients to give back to the community.  We are in contact with so many people who live different lives, and we have an opportunity to influence our community because of the small degrees of separation among various people.”

Martial Arts students at The Dojo of Karate and Fitness will be purchasing Pink Karate Belts for $15 per belt, with $10 of the proceeds going towards the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

During the week of June 7th to June 11th, Sensei Lozano has designated it as Breast Cancer Awareness Week, where students will be exchanging their current Karate Belts for Pink Karate Belts.  And, students will give up their earned ranks of continuous martial arts training to become a unified rank of Pink.

All students will be learning how health and fitness can help prevent their chances of disease, such as breast cancer.  And, by maintaining an active lifestyle that incorporates healthy eating habits, this will allow students and their families to live a more prosperous life.

More importantly, though, it gets the Martial Arts studio together, like a community.

“People want to be apart of something that is bigger than them.  They want to be able to give back in a way that actually affects their community.  We all want to be proud of something and fight for it.  By getting our school together with this new fund raising event, our members feel more empowered than before, and that’s exactly what Martial Arts is really about.  It’s not about the kicks and punches, but about how you can help someone else achieve their goals”, says Sensei Lozano.

In addition to the sense of community The Dojo of Karate has created, Sensei Lozano is also creating the future leaders of America through martial arts training.

In every class, students are challenged to become leaders by working hard and leading by example.  If someone is having a hard time learning a new technique or move, it’s their responsibility to teach the students who are struggling.

If they have a new child trying out Karate classes, it’s a current students job to teach them the ropes and shadow them during their 1st couple of sessions.

Why?

That way students begin to take pride and ownership in their training, at every level.

Those are character traits The Dojo of Karate is always looking to develop in every child because eventually they will have an opportunity to lead a group to follow a common goal. Or start learning how leadership can translate over to great causes in society, such as raising money for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Lastly, The Dojo of Karate & Fitness will be hosting a Breast Cancer Boot Camp on Saturday, June 12th from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM.  This is how parents and members of the community can get together and help raise money  too.

June Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

May 28th, 2010

Summer is here!

This is a very exciting time of year for The Dojo of Karate, as it allows for all of our students to enjoy outdoor activities as a school.

Checkout what we’ve got going on this month.

Pink Karate Belts

As many of you know, we are hosting a fundraising event for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

The Dojo of Karate will be selling Pink Karate Belts for $15 per belt.  Students will be allowed to wear the Pink Belts in class starting next week, when the belts come in.  So, make sure you put your order in, or your child may not have a Pink Belt!

From June 7th to June 11th, we will have Breast Cancer Awareness Week, and this is officially when students can begin to wear their Pink Karate Belts in all of their Karate classes.

And, $10 of the proceeds will go towards the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Our goal is to raise $3,000 as a school.

Breast Cancer Boot Camp

In addition, we will be hosting the 1st Annual Breast Cancer Boot Camp on June 12th from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM.

This will be a 1 hour fitness boot camp that takes all participants through a training session of our regular boot camps.  Exercises would include the use of kettlebells, resistance bands, sandbags, medicine balls, and much, much more!

And, after the workout, there will be a 30 minute consultation class from Dr. Mike Cartwright from Countryside Health & Wellness.  He will be giving a short lecture about health, fitness, and nutrition — and how it can help prevent breast cancer.

To signup for the Breast Cancer Boot Camp, please visit the link below, and fill out the form.

http://www.TheBreastCancerBootCamp.com

Again, our goal is to raise $3,000 as a school for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.  The more participants we get, the closer we can get to achieving our goal.  So feel free to pass on the information to friends, family members, and colleagues.

Karate Tournament

The next Karate Tournament that Black Belt Club members can compete in is the CKA Summer Jam in Parker, CO.  This tournament will be hosted on Saturday, June 26th.

If you are interested in competing, please make sure you get permission from Mr. Lozano, unless it has already been approved.

To learn more about this upcoming tournament, go to: http://coloradokarateassociation.org/

And, last month, Madeline P. and Mollee H. competed in the R.A.G.E. Karate Tournament.

Mollee H. got 5th place in Traditional Forms and a finalist in sparring.

Madeline P. got a 5th place in Sparring, 2nd place in Creative Forms, and 1st place in Traditional Forms.  She also had an opportunity to represent The Dojo of Karate for Forms Grand Champion.

Make sure when you see these two, you congratulate them!

Great job girls!

The Karate Kid

As many of you know, we had a successful Buddy Night / Movie Night last week.  And, the new Karate Kid movie comes out on Friday, June 11th.

We have decided to go as a school to watch The Karate Kid on Sunday, June 13th to a matinee, since it will possibly be less crowded and less expensive tickets for a family.

If you are interested in participating, we will have more information when it nears.

Martial Arts Summer Camp

Many parents have shown interest in the Martial Arts Summer Camp this year that we will be hosting.

Please keep in mind that we need for all parents to make a reservation by next week, in order to save their spot.  We have had interest from all sorts of families.

The cost for students training at The Dojo of Karate is $229 for 2 half-day camps on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

The camp will start on June 7th and run through June 30th.

This is a sports camp / martial arts camp, so your child will be working on all sorts of skills.  Not just Karate.

FaceBook Fan Page

Are you on Facebook?  If not, it’s a great way to reconnect with old and new friends.  Social networking is becoming the new way of communicating on a viral level.

If you’re a student at The Dojo of Karate, become a fan of The Dojo of Karate.  That way, we can still update you about any activities we may be hosting.

And, get your friends to become fans too.  They will be informed about free seminars we may be hosting, fundraisers, and special events.

New Karate Schedule

Remember, the new Summer Martial Arts Schedule will start on June 7th.  We made extra copies of the schedule, so feel free to grab one.

New Faces…

The Dojo of Karate will be hiring an Office Manager to help handle administrative tasks for the school.  This will also alleviate Mr. Lozano from other projects, so he can continue to focus on teaching classes, and growing our school.

This person is very familiar with the culture of The Dojo of Karate, and many of you are good friends with her.

They will be starting within the next couple of weeks.

In addition, as our school continues to grow, we will be looking for potential assistant instructors working as an apprentice, as well as, requiring our senior students to assist in Karate classes on a weekly basis.

This is how students will begin to gain better leadership skills, perfect their technique, and take pride in their training.

Until next time…

Mr. Lozano

Broomfield Breast Cancer Boot Camp

May 18th, 2010

Westminster, CO — May 18th 2010 – Breast Cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women.  There are several organizations out there, such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, and many more, that put on weekend long events where the entire country, regions, states, counties, and towns, can gather together to raise money and find a cure for breast cancer.

Local martial arts expert and certified personal trainer, Javier Lozano, Jr. is the owner and chief instructor at The Dojo of Karate & Fitness in Westminster, and plans on hosting their 1st Inaugural Breast Cancer Boot Camp on June 12th, 2010.

Their goal is to raise over $3,000 and donate the funds to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

However, Coach Lozano plans on approaching this fundraiser a little different.

He wants to get all of his martial arts and fitness members involved too, even though some of the students may be too young to train in a boot camp session.

His plan of attack…? pink karate belts.

Coach Lozano says, “We will be selling pink karate belts to students for them to wear during the week of June 7th to June 12th during their martial arts classes.  This way, they can show their support in finding a cure for breast cancer.  When we brought up the concept a couple of months ago, students were extremely excited about the idea, and couldn’t wait to signup.”

The pink martial arts belts will be on sale for purchase at $15 per belt, with approximately $10 of the proceeds going to the Avon Walk For Breast Cancer.

Than, on Saturday, June 12th from 9:30am to 10:30am The Dojo of Karate & Fitness will be hosting the official Breast Cancer Boot Camp.  A 1-hour boot camp session where participants will have an opportunity to workout in the popular fitness boot camp class.

Their boot camps really focus on variety.

“When someone asks what a typical boot camp consists of, I sort of tell them we do not have a normal routine or workout” says Coach Lozano.  “Now if they want to know what people are saying about our programs and how they feel after the workout, the best example is that they leave feeling like jelly, sweating like pigs, and hurting… while having a big smile on their face.”

The Broomfield Fitness Boot Camp, as it’s known by locals, train with a variety of exercise equipment.  This way, it keeps the workouts interesting, and the athletes on their toes.

For instance, they use resistance bands instead of dumb-bells because it becomes more difficult to control the bands.  There is resistance on both the pushing / pulling motion, as well as the retrieving motion.

In addition, Coach Lozano teaches them how to use sandbags.  It’s an unorthodox way of training because the sand will shift in all different ways, making it difficult to maintain control.  This forces athletes to use their stabilizer muscles too.

“Plus, I tell them they can put on their resume that they are professional sandbag movers, incase an employer is trying to set apart candidates” says Lozano jokingly.

And, the ever so kettlebells are another piece of equipment they train with too.  Kettlebells are beginning to gain popularity because of its functional type movement, strength and cardio exercise, and great results athletes are gaining.

After the Breast Cancer Boot Camp, Coach Lozano invited a local chiropractor from Countryside Health and Wellness, to discuss ways to prevent breast cancer — from diet and nutrition, to physical fitness and exercise.

This will be a 30 minute educational class, in order to teach all of the participants on how they can help prevent breast cancer.

The cost to participate in the Breast Cancer Boot is only $30 per participant with approximately $20 of the proceeds going towards the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

And, if you decide to signup for the Breast Cancer Boot Camp, than Coach Lozano will apply a $30 discount to your 1st month of training.

This is a great way to get introduced into the Broomfield Fitness Boot Camp.

To signup or learn more about the Breast Cancer Boot Camp, please contact The Dojo of Karate and Fitness at: 303.920.4500 or email Coach Lozano at: [email protected].

The Breast Cancer Boot Camp

Due to Mr. Lozano’s travel schedule, we will be hosting our 1st Annual Breast Cancer Boot Camp on June 12th, 2010.  This will allow for us to promote The Breast Cancer Boot Camp, as well as get a jump start to helping donate funds to the Avon Walk For Breast Cancer.

During the week of June 7th – June 11th, we will have Breast Cancer Awareness week, where students can show their support by wearing Pink Belts during class.

As this event gets closer, and more organized, we will have more information

Demo Team Training Days

As many of you know, our Black Belt Club students have been training these past few weeks for the Super Kids Expo on Saturday, April 17th, 2010.

Due to Spring Break, and last minute snow storms, we will have two more practices over the next 2 Saturdays — April 3rd and April 10 at 9:30am to 11:00am.

In addition, we will need a volunteer to assist with the booth while our students are performing.  It will only be for about 20-30 minutes.

If you have questions, please talk to Mr. Lozano.

Karate T-Shirts

As many of you recall, last Summer we created t-shirts for students to wear during the Summer days, since it’s so hot outside, and to help promote The Dojo of Karate.

We plan on doing the same thing this year.

Mr. Lozano will be designing another t-shirt for students to wear, and this new t-shirt will be apart of your uniform.  You will not be allowed to wear older t-shirts from The Dojo of Karate, as we want to continue to have a uniformed look throughout the school.

In addition, we plan on making a select few of long sleeve t-shirts for Spring, however students will not be allowed to wear them during classes, only outside of The Dojo.

The Karate Kid

The remake of the new Karate Kid, starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith will be launching on Friday, June 11th, 2010.  We would like to get a group of students interested in attending the movie on opening day weekend.

We may try to shoot for an evening time slot, or possibly an early afternoon slot, since most kids will be on Summer vacation.

More info to come…

Scheduled Training Dates

As Mr. Lozano mentioned, he will periodically close The Dojo of Karate on Fridays due to training seminars.  By attending these seminars, Mr. Lozano is acquiring better knowledge and skills on how to become a better Martial Arts Instructor, as well as introduce new curriculum to our school.

Below is a list of dates that Mr. Lozano will be out of down.

  • Friday, April 30th, 2010
  • Friday, May 14th, 2010
  • Friday, June 4th, 2010

We will also be closed on Monday, May 31st for Memorial Day weekend.  As well as, July 5th – July 9th, 2010.

Until Next Time!

Mr. Lozano

March Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

March 6th, 2010

Greetings!

We’ve had a wonderful couple of months so far at The Dojo Of Karate, which is great!

Last weekend, we had an extremely successful inner school tournament with over 50 competitors, and it looked like everyone had a blast.

We plan on hosting another inner school tournament in the Fall around September / October this year, and make it a traditional bi-annual event.  However, we will probably have to rent out a local gymnasium for a few hours, in order to accommodate all of the competitors and their guests.

So, here’s what’s going on next over the next few months…

Adult Self-Defense Seminar

As many of you know, we are hosting a FREE adult self-defense workshop on Saturday, March 20th, from 10:30am to 12:00pm.  This is reserved for the first 30 attendees, so I highly suggest you guys register now to save your spot.

To signup for the self-defense workshop click on the link below:

http://www.AdultSelfDefense.com

Feel free to pass on this link to your friends, co-workers, or family members, as we want to make sure we have an opportunity to teach several guests some reality-based, easy to learn self-defense techniques.  Our goal is to host 2-3 of these events per year in order to give back to our community.

Open Karate Tournament

The first open Karate Tournament for the year will be Saturday, March 13th in Parker, CO.  Please keep in mind that you must be a member of Black Belt Club in order to compete in this tournament, however, you can go as a spectator to support our school and your fellow classmates.

We have flyers at the front desk that you can grab, fill-out and mail back.

The Dojo of Karate is a member of the Colorado Karate Association, so if you would like to chase points and have an opportunity to win a Colorado State Title in your division, you can become a member for a small nominal fee.  You also save on your registrations during each event.

To learn more about the Colorado Karate Association simply go to the link below:

http://www.coloradokarateassociation.org/

There you can find a schedule of upcoming tournaments, divisions your and/or your child will be competing in, and information about becoming a member.

Super Kids Expo

Local magazine publisher, Yellow Scene will be hosting their 2nd Annual Super Kids Expo on Saturday, April 17th from 10am to 4pm at the YMCA on 95th and Arapahoe in Lafayette.

This expo is a great way for families to learn about local camps and activities you can signup your child for during the Summer.  The Dojo of Karate decided to purchase a booth for the event to promote our Summer Camp Special, which was a huge success last year.

We were also asked to do a Karate Demonstration for the event!

So, all of our Black Belt Club Members will have an opportunity to train for this event and put on a great show… indoors!

Over the next 5 weeks, Black Belt Club classes will basically be Demo Team Practice.  Since many of our students understand what to expect when putting on a demonstration, routines should be learned fairly quickly.

Please keep in mind that students must be apart of our Black Belt Club in order to participate for the Demo Team.

If your child will not be able to perform during the Super Kids Expo, they will train in Black Belt Club classes, as this allows them to learn certain routines.

To learn more about Yellow Scene, go to their website.

http://yellowscene.com

Karate Uniforms

As many of you know, the basic Karate uniforms students wear get fairly dirty quickly, or kids grow out of them.  And, they are practically impossible to get white.  If your child falls in that category, please understand we want our students to look presentable during classes and outside of The Dojo, therefore we are asking all parents and students to invest $30 to purchase a new uniform — if they are about to fall apart, getting to small, or no longer white.

The Dojo of Karate carries all sizes, so feel free to talk to Mr. Lozano about purchasing a size.

If Mr. Lozano feels a student’s uniform has become “wore out” he will let the student and parent know about his too.

Thank you for your understanding.

The Breast Cancer Boot Camp

Last year, The Dojo of Karate partnered with a parent to help raise money for the Avon Walk For Breast Cancer in June.

This year, we’re going to jump ahead and host a Fitness Boot Camp to help raise money and find a cure for Breast Cancer.

We plan on hosting The 1st Annual Breast Cancer Boot Camp in May (date to be announced).  However, we  would like this to be a community and school event.

If you are interested in participating in a Fitness Boot Camp that is for a GREAT cause, I highly suggest you keep your ears peeled because this is going to be a stellar event… and a killer workout!

An example of getting the school involved is having ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Week’ where students can purchase PINK belts to wear during their training sessions to show their support.

Within the next few weeks, we will have more information about this.

Bolder Boulder 10K

Do you plan on running the Bolder Boulder this year?  Do you want someone to run with you during the Bolder Boulder?

Well, we would like to put together a group of adults, parents, and kids interested in participating in this annual event hosted in Boulder.

Mr. Lozano ran the Bolder Boulder a few years ago and had a blast!  Even if you’ve never ran a 10K, you’ll have some fun because several families get together to run this event.

The Bolder Boulder is hosted on Memorial Day Weekend, so if you’re in town, you should make an attempt to run it!

We’ll have more information about this too.

Well, that is pretty much it for now.

Until next time!

Sensei Lozano
