Kids, Martial Arts, And The Valuable Lessons They Learn – Part 2

June 24th, 2010

Welcome to the 2nd part of Kids, Martial Arts, And The Valuable Lessons They Learn.  If you missed the last section of this article, please click here to catch up.

Patience With Self And Others

One of the most important lessons that children learn from martial arts classes is patience. It is not uncommon to observe students who have learned hapkido, Taekwondo, and other styles to take a methodical approach to problem-solving. Part of the reason is due to increased self-confidence. Kids who have studied certain disciplines are more likely to be confident in their abilities. As a result, they’re more likely to be patient in their interactions with others.

Another reason for their patient, methodical approach is the calmness they learn during instruction. Far from chasing immediate gratification, they learn to appreciate the value of waiting.

Perseverance Toward A Goal

Dojo instructors often emphasize to their students a continual pursuit of perfection in their technique. This is one of the reasons accomplished black belts seek perpetual instruction. Likewise, kids’ martial arts classes focus on advancing toward a goal. Sadly, children are seldom given the opportunity to enjoy personal accomplishments. In a dojo, young people are encouraged to perfect their moves and concentration in order to advance to a higher level of proficiency.

There are several advantages kids enjoy by participating in martial arts classes. Each of these advantages offers lifelong value and will likely be drawn upon over and over throughout the years. For parents, providing their children with the opportunity to learn karate, judo, or any other style is a gift that may outlast every other.

If you would like your child to train at a safe and exciting martial arts school that is family oriented, than contact The Dojo of Karate & Fitness at 303.920.4500 or email at [email protected].

They are located in the Safeway Shopping Center on 128th Ave and Zuni St. in Westminster / Broomfield.

Kids, Martial Arts, And The Valuable Lessons They Learn – Part 1

June 22nd, 2010

Children can gain unique value from learning the martial arts.

Parents often enroll their kids into classes in order to teach them how to defend themselves. While self-defense is certainly one advantage to pursuing any given fighting style, it is the least among several benefits. Kids are at a stage in which they absorb everything around them. They’re deeply impressionable. They adopt others’ influences into their own perspective of the world and those with whom they interact. Kids martial arts classes play an important role in that development.

In this article, we’ll describe the powerful lessons that young people learn as they pursue the martial arts. If you’re a parent and are considering enrolling your son or daughter, you may be surprised by the valuable lifelong lessons to which you’re giving them access.

Discipline And Focus

Teachers across the country complain that the attention spans of their students have plummeted over the last several years. Whether this is due to the fast-paced environment in which these kids live or other reasons, they lack the focus of the previous generation. Instruction in karate, judo, aikido, and similar systems can help young people regain the discipline they need. The repetition of moves encourages a deep focus as children struggle to master those moves with precision.

The discipline and focus they gain from the instruction has value far beyond the classroom. Eventually, they’ll use these traits when performing their jobs and interacting with their families.

Physical Fitness And Coordination

Obesity continues to spread and people are living more sedentary lives than ever. Making matters worse, many public and private schools have eliminated physical education due to budget cuts. Parents are observing their children, dismayed that they would prefer to sit inside and watch television rather than go outside. This trend has led to a weight problem among young people. The lack of exercise has taken a toll on their physical fitness.

When parents enroll a child into martial arts classes, that child is able to take advantage of a rich source of physical activity. It improves their cardiovascular health as well as their coordination. What’s more, dojos offer year-round instruction. While Little League and other team sports are seasonal, martial arts classes provide a source of physical fitness throughout the entire year.

June Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

May 28th, 2010

Summer is here!

This is a very exciting time of year for The Dojo of Karate, as it allows for all of our students to enjoy outdoor activities as a school.

Checkout what we’ve got going on this month.

Pink Karate Belts

As many of you know, we are hosting a fundraising event for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

The Dojo of Karate will be selling Pink Karate Belts for $15 per belt.  Students will be allowed to wear the Pink Belts in class starting next week, when the belts come in.  So, make sure you put your order in, or your child may not have a Pink Belt!

From June 7th to June 11th, we will have Breast Cancer Awareness Week, and this is officially when students can begin to wear their Pink Karate Belts in all of their Karate classes.

And, $10 of the proceeds will go towards the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Our goal is to raise $3,000 as a school.

Breast Cancer Boot Camp

In addition, we will be hosting the 1st Annual Breast Cancer Boot Camp on June 12th from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM.

This will be a 1 hour fitness boot camp that takes all participants through a training session of our regular boot camps.  Exercises would include the use of kettlebells, resistance bands, sandbags, medicine balls, and much, much more!

And, after the workout, there will be a 30 minute consultation class from Dr. Mike Cartwright from Countryside Health & Wellness.  He will be giving a short lecture about health, fitness, and nutrition — and how it can help prevent breast cancer.

To signup for the Breast Cancer Boot Camp, please visit the link below, and fill out the form.

http://www.TheBreastCancerBootCamp.com

Again, our goal is to raise $3,000 as a school for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.  The more participants we get, the closer we can get to achieving our goal.  So feel free to pass on the information to friends, family members, and colleagues.

Karate Tournament

The next Karate Tournament that Black Belt Club members can compete in is the CKA Summer Jam in Parker, CO.  This tournament will be hosted on Saturday, June 26th.

If you are interested in competing, please make sure you get permission from Mr. Lozano, unless it has already been approved.

To learn more about this upcoming tournament, go to: http://coloradokarateassociation.org/

And, last month, Madeline P. and Mollee H. competed in the R.A.G.E. Karate Tournament.

Mollee H. got 5th place in Traditional Forms and a finalist in sparring.

Madeline P. got a 5th place in Sparring, 2nd place in Creative Forms, and 1st place in Traditional Forms.  She also had an opportunity to represent The Dojo of Karate for Forms Grand Champion.

Make sure when you see these two, you congratulate them!

Great job girls!

The Karate Kid

As many of you know, we had a successful Buddy Night / Movie Night last week.  And, the new Karate Kid movie comes out on Friday, June 11th.

We have decided to go as a school to watch The Karate Kid on Sunday, June 13th to a matinee, since it will possibly be less crowded and less expensive tickets for a family.

If you are interested in participating, we will have more information when it nears.

Martial Arts Summer Camp

Many parents have shown interest in the Martial Arts Summer Camp this year that we will be hosting.

Please keep in mind that we need for all parents to make a reservation by next week, in order to save their spot.  We have had interest from all sorts of families.

The cost for students training at The Dojo of Karate is $229 for 2 half-day camps on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

The camp will start on June 7th and run through June 30th.

This is a sports camp / martial arts camp, so your child will be working on all sorts of skills.  Not just Karate.

FaceBook Fan Page

Are you on Facebook?  If not, it’s a great way to reconnect with old and new friends.  Social networking is becoming the new way of communicating on a viral level.

If you’re a student at The Dojo of Karate, become a fan of The Dojo of Karate.  That way, we can still update you about any activities we may be hosting.

And, get your friends to become fans too.  They will be informed about free seminars we may be hosting, fundraisers, and special events.

New Karate Schedule

Remember, the new Summer Martial Arts Schedule will start on June 7th.  We made extra copies of the schedule, so feel free to grab one.

New Faces…

The Dojo of Karate will be hiring an Office Manager to help handle administrative tasks for the school.  This will also alleviate Mr. Lozano from other projects, so he can continue to focus on teaching classes, and growing our school.

This person is very familiar with the culture of The Dojo of Karate, and many of you are good friends with her.

They will be starting within the next couple of weeks.

In addition, as our school continues to grow, we will be looking for potential assistant instructors working as an apprentice, as well as, requiring our senior students to assist in Karate classes on a weekly basis.

This is how students will begin to gain better leadership skills, perfect their technique, and take pride in their training.

Until next time…

Mr. Lozano

Martial Arts Kids Summer Camp

May 8th, 2010

Westminster, CO – May 10th — How would you feel if your child gained rock solid confidence, laser like focus, and a Black Belt attitude this summer?

Sound good so far?

And what if they also learned life skills, developed balance, coordination, and agility — all while meeting new friends.

Would you still be interested?

Most parents are looking to get their child involved in a Summer Camp activity, as soon as school gets out.  This is a great way to keep kids active by putting them on a schedule that allows them to have fun and learn, while getting out of the classroom setting.

Why is this so important?

Let’s face it… kids need to be kids.

Local martial arts school owner, Javier Lozano, Jr., is the Master Instructor at The Dojo of Karate & Fitness.  He has been teaching in the Martial Arts for over 17 years and working with kids for just as long.  Sensei Lozano has a very good understanding of how to work with kids, while getting their best efforts and building their confidence.

The Dojo of Karate will be hosting a Martial Arts Kids Summer Camp starting on June 7th and ending on June 30th.

This Martial Arts Kids Summer Camp will be held as half-day camps running every Monday and Wednesday for 4 weeks, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

When your child enrolls in the Martial Arts Kids Summer Camp, they will learn self-confidence and self-control, learn important child safety skills, gain increased fitness through martial arts training and activities, develop respect and leadership skills, and much, much, more.

Sensei Lozano says “our parents truly enjoy the lessons we teach their kids during every class.  We never talk about the same thing, and always discuss topics that parents need their child to hear and re-enforce what’s being taught at home.  In addition, many of our students are learning skills, such as leadership characteristics at such a young age that their teachers are noticing significant differences in their academics & socialization.”

The Martial Arts Kids Summer Camp will be serving families in Broomfield, Westminster, Thornton, and Erie, for children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old.

The Dojo of Karate will only have 30 spots for Summer Campers, due to spacing and proper supervision.  Plus, this makes the camps more personal, which other Summer Camps can not promise.

There will be three different Summer Camp packages for parents to select from.  Packages range from a basic, introductory level Summer Camp, which simply includes evening Martial Arts Classes, to a full package Summer Camp, allowing your child to participate in 2 half-day Summer Camps sessions per week and unlimited Karate training in the evenings.

The Dojo of Karate is conveniently located next to Safeway on 128th Avenue and Zuni Street in the Willow Run Shopping Center.  They have been operating their as a locally owned business for nearly two years, and currently have nearly 110 members in their Martial Arts, Self-Defense and Fitness programs.

To learn more about the Martial Arts Kids Summer Camp, and reserve your spot, please visit The Dojo of Karate at: http://www.KidsKarateKamp.com.

May Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

May 4th, 2010

Greetings from Hutto, TX!

I’m writing this months newsletter from my hotel room in Hutto, TX — a small town outside of Austin.  As we speak, I just finished an intense course of Self-Defense Grappling and achieved an Associate Instructor Certification.  In a few months I will be testing for my Level 1 certification.

Jim Mahan is the coach and creator of the Self-Defense Grappling program.  He is the owner and head trainer at Absolute Self-Defense & Fitness in Kileen, TX.  Along with his NUMEROUS credentials, he is currently the strength and conditioning coach for the 1st Annual Warrior Games, held in Colorado Springs next week.

Why is this training so important for The Dojo of Karate…?

To make a long winded answer short, I want to give all of our students the necessary tools to be successful in life and in their martial arts training.  The more I am able to share the knowledge I gain, the more our students will become complete martial artists.

Super Kids Expo

So last month a group of our Black Belt Club members participated in a Martial Arts Demonstration that took place outside of the YMCA in Lafayette.  These kids trained hard over a span of 6 weeks, and WOWED the crowd!

Parents from other schools were extremely impressed in their confidence, form, and stage presence during the demonstration, and as the Master Instructor, couldn’t be more proud of them.

If you didn’t get to see it, below is a link to the video.  Some parts were edited out, but overall, they did great.

School Closures

We will be closed the following days.

Friday, May 14th

Monday, May 31st

Friday, June 4th

Monday – Friday, July 5th-9th

Please mark your calendars ahead of time.

Also, we had planned on getting a team of students and parents together to run the Bolder Boulder, however, I will need to be leaving town to Seattle for personal matters.  If there is another big event that is a 5k or 10k race, maybe The Dojo of Karate can get some students together to race it.

Buddy Day / Movie Night

We plan on hosting our popular Buddy Day and than combining it with a Movie Night for students.

Basically, students will be able to bring their friends to The Dojo of Karate for a free Karate lesson, and than stick around to watch The Karate Kid.

This will give our students a chance to share their martial arts training with a friend and enjoy a classic martial arts movie.

Buddy Day / Movie Night will be hosted on Friday, May 21st from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

We will not be providing food, so we highly suggest parents have their kids bring a snack, or feed them before the event.

Any friend that a student brings will be able to get a prize from our prize box, and if their friend enrolls in our Martial Arts classes, the student will also receive a free $25 gift card to any where they want to go.

Martial Arts Kids Summer Camp

The Dojo of Karate plans on hosting a Summer Camp this year for both students and non-students.  We are mainly promoting the Summer Camps to non-students, however, if your child is interested in participating in our Summer Camps too, please talk to Mr. Lozano.

The Martial Arts Kids Summer Camps will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8am to 12pm, starting on June 7th and ending on June 30th.

This is a great way to get people oriented into our Martial Arts program, and help teach kids life skills, agility and coordination training, and get fitness, all while having fun.

We are limiting the total amount of Summer Campers to 30 participants, with about 10 to 12 spaces reserved for students in The Dojo of Karate.

Their will be an additional fee for this service, however, it will be at a discounted rate compared to outside students.

Summer T-Shirts

The Dojo of Karate is having another T-shirt designed for the Summer of 2010, as mentioned in the previous newsletter.  Remember, all students will be required to purchase a new t-shirt this year.

The design is completely different.  Once we get a sample in, we will do pre-orders.

Summer Vacations For Students

As you know, Summer vacations are creeping up, and many families will take some time off.  Please keep in mind, that all members of The Dojo of Karate are still responsible to make up for their missed classes by attending extra days before they leave for vacation, and after they leave for vacation.

As we’ve mentioned in the past, The Dojo of Karate operates on a 48 week cycle.  There are 52 weeks in a year.  This gives you approximately 4 weeks of “wiggle room” to miss classes, go on vacation, or The Dojo closes for vacation.

As any gym membership, all membership tuition payments will still be due on your regular scheduled date.

Finally, we will have a Summer Vacation List for families to inform Mr. Lozano when you and/or your child will be on vacation.

New Split Club Members

We finally have our first members of Split Club!!!  Vira B. and Andrew Y. are the first members inducted into the Split Club by performing full splits in class.  They will be receiving a certificate and their picture will be posted on our bulletin board.

When you see either Vira B. or Andrew Y., please congratulate them for their hard work and effort.

Here’s a picture of them performing the full splits.

Martial Arts Summer Schedule

In order to keep classes at a moderate size and accommodate necessary changes to our studio, The Dojo of Karate will be providing an updated Martial Arts schedule within the next few days, which will go into effect around the 1st week of June.

In addition, Summer is around the corner and we plan on having an influx of new students enrolling in our Summer Camp Programs.  Last year, we had over 30 students enroll in our Summer Programs over the course of 2 1/2 months.

Fitness Boot Camps Going 5 Days Per Week!!!

That’s right!  We plan on offering our fitness boot camps 5 days per week starting in June, around when the new schedule change comes out.

We realized that the evening classes are extremely popular among our athletes, and that having a nice size group allows for everyone to help motivate and push each other.

The Fitness Boot Camps are looking to be offered at 7:00pm Monday-Friday… but it’s not in stone quite yet.

More than likely, we will be ending the early morning camps.

And, we plan on making boot camps continuous, meaning they will be offered year-around.

We want our athletes to make lifestyle changes in their fitness and diet.  By providing classes year-round and at a regularly scheduled time slot, participants will be able to maximize their results and achieve their goals.

More information to come shortly.
