July Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

July 14th, 2010

Greetings!

I know July has already started and it seems like it’s almost on its way out, however, after being on vacation all last week, I didn’t have a chance to send out the July newsletter sooner.

So, with that said, here is all of our July updates and upcoming events.

1st Annual Summer Potluck

As many of you know we held our 1st Annual Holiday Party in December last year.  We had over 80 people gather at our school with a giant potluck, award ceremony, and video presentation.  Families had fun, kids ate a ton, and we all socialized with others.

We are now going to host our next school gathering for the Summer to get students, families, and friends together again to enjoy Colorado’s beautiful Summer, and just have some fun!

On July 31st from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, we will have our 1st Annual Summer Potluck at the Big Dry Creek Park.  This is located on 128th Avenue, just south of The Dojo of Karate (within walking distance).

The Dojo of Karate will provide hot dogs with condiments for all guests to enjoy.

All we ask is that every family bring a dish to share with the rest of our guests.  We may expect around 100 people to attend.

Feel free to invite friends and family members interested in attending our 1st Annual Summer Potluck, even if they are not members of our school.

Families can also bring water guns, and we can all have a big water gun fight!

There is also a softball/baseball field at the Big Dry Creek Park.  If anyone is interested in getting together and playing some softball during our Summer Party, please feel free to bring some bats and softballs.  Everyone else should bring their own gloves.

There is a signup sheet at the front counter.  All families please signup to bring a dish to share and the amount of guests that plan on attending.  We want to make sure everyone gets a enough food.

Possible Class Expansion

It is very exciting to watch our school grow, especially in the Beginners Karate Program, since so many kids are getting the benefits of learning Martial Arts.

Since this program is growing during the Summer months, and Back-To-School is around the corner, we will potentially add an additional time slot for the Beginners Karate Program for Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 PM to 6:15 PM.

This will than allow for The Dojo of Karate to offer Martial Arts classes 5 days a week for new students.

However, please keep in that Beginning Students are only allowed to attend between 2 or 3 classes per week.

What is Black Belt Club?

Well, it’s our program for students interested in taking their Karate training to the next level.

However, this isn’t just some ordinary Karate Program… There are all sorts of benefits and requirements in being apart of the Black Belt Club.

Students will have the opportunity to receive the following:

  • Unlimited karate training.
  • Special Black Belt Club classes every Friday.
  • Weapons training, such as the Bo Staff, Kamas, or Nunchucks.
  • Custom embroidered, brushed cotton, middleweight uniform with students name on the front and The Dojo of Karate log0 on the back.
  • Eligibility for Demo Team.
  • Eligibility to compete in Karate Tournaments.
  • Eligibility to be on Leadership Team.
  • Discounts on seminars and events.
  • And much more!

How do you become a member of Black Belt Club?

We are now updating the process of our Black Belt Club membership.

The first step is that students must write a letter, in their own words, on “why they want to become a member of Black Belt Club”.

Next, we sit down as a family to discuss Black Belt Club membership, what it entails, requirements, etc.

After we have our discussion, the family will need to go home and have a discussion whether this is going to be something that everyone wants to be apart of.  This is a family decision, not a single person decision.

Why do we do all of this?

Black Belt is a very difficult goal for students to achieve.  It requires a lot of training and dedication, and you need to be mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared.  For most students it can take between 3-4 years to achieve this goal, pending they do not miss belt tests, pass all of their exams and display proper attitude at home and obtain ‘B’ average grades in school.

In addition, we require students to be a minimum of 10 years old to achieve a ‘Junior Black Belt’.

Why?

Kids may “know the moves” but they will not know HOW to perform the moves as designed… until their bodies develop.  Usually that won’t happen until they are teenagers or adults.

If your child is interested in becoming a member of Black Belt Club, please talk to Mr. Lozano, so he can guide your child in the right direction.

Wado Karate Seminar

As many of you may have heard, we are hosting a Wado Karate Seminar on Saturday, August 7th and 8th.  A colleague of mine, Sensei Bob Nash is coming out from Seattle, Washington to teach this seminar.

Sensei Nash is one of only 2 people living outside of Japan that has earned a 7th degree black belt in JKF Wado-Kai.  He has been training in Wado-Kai for nearly 50 years, and brings a wealth of knowledge about our classical Japanese martial art.

He travels around the world, from Europe to Australia, and cross the United States hosting Wado-Kai Seminars at various dojos and facilities because of his technical expertise and understanding in the art of Wado Karate.

The fact we are able to have Sensei Nash come to our school and teach a seminar is an opportunity of a lifetime for many practitioners because he’s as close to the source as it comes from.

We plan on splitting the group from kids and adults, to make the floor more manageable.

Kids will have about a 2 hour seminar, while teens and adults will have the entire weekend to train, approximately 8 to 10 hours.  The schedule will look something like this.  However, we still need to finalize the time slots.

Saturday: 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM — Kids

Saturday: 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM — Teens & Adults

Sunday: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM — Teens & Adults

Students must be a minimum of an Orange Belt in order to participate.

We also plan on having a friend of mine, Sensei David Sasaki, bring some of his students from Conifer to attend the seminar too.

The cost of the seminar has yet to be determined, but we will have it shortly.

Please make sure you pre-register for the seminar so we know how many people we need to accommodate.

April Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

March 31st, 2010

Greetings!

We’re already in April… how time flies when you’re having a blast.

As many of you know there is quite a bit that has taken place these past few months, and we’re excited to see what else will happen over the next few months of Spring and Summer.

Introductory Karate Program

If you have friends interested in joining our Martial Arts Kids Program, they can get started by simply joining our Introductory Karate Program.  This allows for students to try out our classes at a minimal cost.

The Introductory Karate Program includes:

  • 1 Private Class
  • 2 Group Classes
  • 1 Free Karate Uniform

And remember… if you refer a friend to The Dojo of Karate, you’ll receive a free movie pass and possibly a free $25.00 gift card if they decide to enroll!

Fitness KickBoxing

As many of you know, we offer a Fitness KickBoxing program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00pm to 5:45pm.  This is a great opportunity to get a great workout right before or slightly after your child has classes.

Our Fitness KickBoxing Classes includes a 35 minute workout to great music on heavy, free standing bags, 5 minutes of an ab workout, and 5 minutes of stretching and cool down.

This is a great way to add a little cross training to your daily workouts too, so you don’t get bored, and your muscles do not hit a plateau.

And remember, we offer a 25% discount for the 2nd family member and 50% off for the 3rd family member, and rates start as low as $79/month!

New Fitness Boot Camp Schedule

Many people have been requesting a later time slot for our Fitness Boot Camp during the week.  So, we’re gonna give it to yah!

Starting on April 13th, our Fighting Fit2 Fitness Boot Camp Program will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 PM to 8:45 PM.

And, if we get a high enough demand, we will also include a mid morning class too…

We are now accepting sign ups for the evening F2 Boot Camp, so talk to Mr. Lozano ASAP to reserve your spot.

Plus, we are currently offering a 50% discount for our Fitness Boot Camps to all parents and member of The Dojo of Karate.  But hurry, this offers expires on April 13th…

If you are a current Adult Student, we offer program add-ons for the boot camp training.

Fitness Boot Camp Challenge

The Dojo of Karate has decided to create a friendly competition among all boot campers during the next 4 week cycle of training, which starts Monday, April 12th, 2010.

Basically, you’ll have the opportunity to WIN one FREE month of training in our Fighting Fit2 Fitness Boot Camp, if you become one of the people that loses the most body weight percentage over the course of 30 days.

However, there are some strict rules that apply, and you need to be dedicated to the fitness program… including the nutrition plan.

The Breast Cancer Boot Camp

Due to Mr. Lozano’s travel schedule, we will be hosting our 1st Annual Breast Cancer Boot Camp on June 12th, 2010.  This will allow for us to promote The Breast Cancer Boot Camp, as well as get a jump start to helping donate funds to the Avon Walk For Breast Cancer.

During the week of June 7th – June 11th, we will have Breast Cancer Awareness week, where students can show their support by wearing Pink Belts during class.

As this event gets closer, and more organized, we will have more information

Demo Team Training Days

As many of you know, our Black Belt Club students have been training these past few weeks for the Super Kids Expo on Saturday, April 17th, 2010.

Due to Spring Break, and last minute snow storms, we will have two more practices over the next 2 Saturdays — April 3rd and April 10 at 9:30am to 11:00am.

In addition, we will need a volunteer to assist with the booth while our students are performing.  It will only be for about 20-30 minutes.

If you have questions, please talk to Mr. Lozano.

Karate T-Shirts

As many of you recall, last Summer we created t-shirts for students to wear during the Summer days, since it’s so hot outside, and to help promote The Dojo of Karate.

We plan on doing the same thing this year.

Mr. Lozano will be designing another t-shirt for students to wear, and this new t-shirt will be apart of your uniform.  You will not be allowed to wear older t-shirts from The Dojo of Karate, as we want to continue to have a uniformed look throughout the school.

In addition, we plan on making a select few of long sleeve t-shirts for Spring, however students will not be allowed to wear them during classes, only outside of The Dojo.

The Karate Kid

The remake of the new Karate Kid, starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith will be launching on Friday, June 11th, 2010.  We would like to get a group of students interested in attending the movie on opening day weekend.

We may try to shoot for an evening time slot, or possibly an early afternoon slot, since most kids will be on Summer vacation.

More info to come…

Scheduled Training Dates

As Mr. Lozano mentioned, he will periodically close The Dojo of Karate on Fridays due to training seminars.  By attending these seminars, Mr. Lozano is acquiring better knowledge and skills on how to become a better Martial Arts Instructor, as well as introduce new curriculum to our school.

Below is a list of dates that Mr. Lozano will be out of down.

  • Friday, April 30th, 2010
  • Friday, May 14th, 2010
  • Friday, June 4th, 2010

We will also be closed on Monday, May 31st for Memorial Day weekend.  As well as, July 5th – July 9th, 2010.

Until Next Time!

Mr. Lozano

The Karate Kid Movie

February 15th, 2010

On June 11th 2010, the remake of the original ‘The Karate Kid’ will be debuting on the silver screen.

The Karate Kid will star martial arts phenom and movie actor Jackie Chan along side with up-and-coming actor Jaden Smith, the son of Academy Award nominee Will Smith.

Jaden Smith has been in a few movies as a youngster, but this is his first headlining role, playing as Dre Parker.

Dre Parker and his mother move to Beijing, China to start a new life.  Being an outsider and not of Chinese decent, Dre is bullied by a local martial arts gang at school and in his neighborhood.

During one scene, Dre is jumped by the gang in pursuit to beat him up, when Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) pops out of nowhere to defend Dre.

Mr. Han than takes Dre under his wing to teach him how to defend himself, so he can face these bullies, and stand up to them.

It appears, towards the end of the movie, Dre enters a Karate Tournament to fight and compete against some of the gang members.

If you watched the original, than you know the outcome

However, if you haven’t seen the original The Karate Kid… you are missing out!!!

Though this remake of The Karate Kid will be difficult to stand up to the original, which started Ralph Machio and Pat Morita, the trailer looked very interesting.  It seems as though Jaden Smith had been training for awhile to develop his skills as a Martial Artist.  Than again, at such a young age, kids pickup very quickly the moves and techniques in Karate.

As a practitioner for 20 years, I’ve seen many amazing sports martial arts competitors from kids to adults, so I can comfortably say what is authentic and correct.

One further note… If you are a fan of Linken Park… I believe they are going to have the movies headlining theme song… which sounds amazing.  No better band than them to get you pumped up for a Summer flick!

Below is a trailer of The Karate Kid coming out June 11th, 2010.

Summer Karate Course

May 19th, 2009

So, we have a new promotion going on for the Summer 2009.

6 Weeks of Karate Lessons and a FREE uniform for ONLY $129…

This is a REALLY good deal, given that families will probably be on vacation, so this allows them to try out Karate lessons, see if it’s a fit, than enroll in our Beginners Program.

Anyways… to help spread the word out, The Dojo of Karate got a bunch of students together the past two weekends to pass out flyers to some of our neighborhoods around the community.  This is a great way to get our students involved in growing the Martial Arts School and feel like they are apart of our small community.  Plus, I gave all students who participated a free movie pass.

Well, we passed out about 1800 flyers last Saturday in 4 subdivisions: Home Farm, Brandywine, Willow Park, and Willow Run.  I had no clue how large these communities were because we had a large team helping out, and we ran out of flyers pretty quickly.

The following weekend we did Amherst, Harmony Park, and McKay Landing.

All these subdivisions are within 1-2 miles of The Dojo, which is great.  We’ve also received some phone calls, so it’s helping a bit.

I’m just happy that students at The Dojo stepped up BIG TIME to help grow our school — a goal of 100 students by years end.  If we continue at this pace, I’m sure we’ll make our goal.

Thanks to ALL students at The Dojo of Karate!  We couldn’t have done it without you!

Mr. Lozano
